Developmental crisis or Political Opportunism

I was researching abt the various events that happened in Nandigram last year. There is enough material put in by both the sides - the govt as well as the opposition. And both so palatably, that one who reads only one side of the story will surely get biased.

But this raises pertinent questions. Will the state be able to get out of the current crisis and move ahead on the path of the development? How many more innocent lives will have to be sacrificed? For how long will one party try to get political mileage for the fault in the state machinery of the other? What if the opposition comes to power tomorrow, will the other parties again play the spoilsport?

It is a known fact, that the events of the last year in West Bengal – Singur issue, nandigram issue, Talisma Nasreen issue, have affected the image of the party in power. The current state of affairs is really sad to look at.

Left govt. claims, that the clashes started on a wrong footing, and the goons hired by the opposition, were responsible for the ruckus. They claim, that the police firing on March 14, 2007 was more of a protective measure. While the other side of the coin, states that the Nandigram violence started because the govt. wanted to give the Land for the chemical hub SEZ by the Salim group, without proper compensation, and against the wish of the villagers. The subsequent November violence only worsened it. In the bargain several innocent villagers lost their lives. The CM, who was known as the liberal socialist who welcomed capitalists, is increasingly lose ground. The biggie Reliance pulled out of Bengal. The govt. at the centre which came out for the cause of the tribals in Orissa-shootout, didn’t try to interfere much here, because the sensitive alliance at the centre was at stake.

For how long personal ambitions will precede the duties of the person elected by the people, this citizen wonders.
